The Hamziyyah of Imam al-Buṣīrī
The Hamziyyah is Imam al-Busiri's ode in praise of the Prophet ﷺ, a companion in spirit to his more famous Burdah, and one that many students of the tradition consider even more intricate in its craft. Over twenty years after his rendering of the Burdah, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf now brings this second great poem into English, with an introduction that situates the work for the reader coming to it fresh.
The poem itself moves like a journey of love. It touches on the Prophet's ﷺ blessed life and the era he lived in, recounts his miracles alongside the miracles of the Qur'an, follows a voyage from Cairo to Mecca and Medina, and turns at points to critique of other Abrahamic traditions and to the poet's own introspection. It is a work that rewards slow, attentive reading, verse building on verse toward its subject.
Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi, who has spent fifty-five years immersed in al-Busiri's poetry, provides the foreword, and states plainly that this translation deserves both praise and celebration. This hardcover edition, presented with a slipcase, is a fitting home for a poem meant to be returned to.
