Mukhtasar Abi Shuja — also known as Ghayat al-Ikhtisar — is the universal beginner's matn of the Shafii school. Composed by Qadi Abu Shuja al-Isfahani in fifth-century AH Basra, the matn distils the entire ground of Shafii ibadat and muamalat into a short prose tract of perhaps fifty pages: tahara, salat, zakat, fasting, hajj, sales, inheritance, marriage and divorce, criminal law, judicature. For more than nine centuries it has been the universal first text placed in the hands of beginning Shafii students.
