Kitab al-Tanbih is Imam Abu Ishaq al-Shirazi's celebrated foundational matn of the Shafii school — one of the five canonical foundational texts of the school alongside al-Muharrar of al-Rafii and the Minhaj of al-Nawawi. Composed in fifth-century AH Baghdad, the matn presents the rulings of Shafii fiqh in compact, memorisable prose; subsequent commentaries (foremost al-Najm al-Thaqib of al-Shirbini) make it accessible to advanced students. Imam al-Shirazi, the master of the Nizamiyya college in Baghdad, was the foremost Shafii authority of his age.
