Imam Shihab al-Din Ahmad b. Muhammad Ibn Hajar al-Haytami (909-974 AH / 1504-1567 CE) was the chief Shafii jurist of his age, resident in Mecca where he served as mufti. His Tuhfat al-Muhtaj — a ten-volume commentary on al-Nawawi's Minhaj — is one of the four canonical late-Shafii commentaries on the matn. His al-Sawaiq al-Muhriqa is a major defense of Sunni positions on the Companions.
